Morris dancing is a traditional English folk dance usually performed by retired men who are immune to embarrassment. Dancers traditionally wear bells, and clap a combination of swords, sticks and handkerchiefs together in time with traditional music. Some torment local crowds with the line: “for this next dance, we need a volunteer”!
Pros:
- Camaraderie, and a good way of meeting new people
- Easy to get into via local community groups
- It’s fun, and deliberately silly (it’s no accident!)
- Most dances are relatively simple and easy to learn
- Preserves an ancient tradition
Cons:
- Not the most fashionable hobby
- It could be the most embarrassing hobby (although there are plenty of good contenders)
- Minor injuries are surprisingly common
- Requires practise and dedication
