One of the oldest games in the world, chess is as popular as ever thanks to television series like The Queen’s Gambit. A game of seemingly simple rules, it requires a bright mind and a lot of practise to play well.
Pros:
- Quite simple rules
- Low cost
- Improves memory and focus
- You can play anywhere in the world
- You don’t need to speak the same language as your opponent
- You’re not looking at a screen
- Suitable for all ages
- Doesn’t take up much space
- Exercises both left (logical) and right (creative) sides of your brain
- Does not rely on luck or trickery (like some games)
Cons:
- There’s always someone better than you!
- Too slow for some people
- Not the most glamourous game
- Takes a long time to become a good player
