Judo, karate, muay thai, taekwando, kickboxing – and dozens more! Without getting into a ‘which is best?’ debate, all martial arts are great for general fitness, and each offers something different.

Pros:

  • Not reliant on the weather
  • Helps weight loss and muscle gain
  • Inexpensive
  • Good cardiovascular workout
  • Fitness: good for flexibility, balance, agility and reflexes
  • Mental health: good for self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Can be social

Cons:

  • Injuries are fairly common
  • You’ll need a local martial arts gym
  • Difficult to practise at home
