Trainspotting

The main goal is to spot all of a certain type of rolling stock (i.e. trains), but it can also involve ‘bashing’ (travelling on) every section of track on certain lines. It can be addictive, so make sure you have a good packed lunch.

Pros:

  • Modern technology makes the hobby easier than ever
  • Easy to get into via online communities
  • Trainspotters may be able to spot problems on the track, preventing accidents
  • It’s free
  • Calming, and surprisingly good for mental wellbeing

Cons:

  • Not the most fashionable hobby
  • Modern trains are much less interesting than steam trains
  • Requires patience and determination
  • Lots of hours can be spent on wet, rainy platforms
