Ice Hockey

The world’s most popular indoor spectator sport makes quite a good hobby too – but it can be difficult to start playing. Once you’ve mastered the ability to ice skate, the ability to play hockey, and have all the necessary safety equipment, there’s nothing quite like it. Fighting is not essential.

Pros:

  • Social
  • Character-building, and helps teamwork & leadership skills
  • Health & Fitness: a good aerobic exercise, muscle-builder and calorie-burner
  • Mental health: releases endorphins, dopamine and serotonin that can help reduce stress and symptoms of anxiety and depression
  • Boosts self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Increases balance and coordination

Cons:

  • Requires a nearby ice rink and lots of equipment
  • A very physical sport with a high risk of injuries
  • Difficult to learn (requires the ability to ice skate as well as the ability to play hockey, both at a very high speed)
  • Hard to practise alone
  • Potential fallings-out with teammates
